We Analysed Thousands of Real Print Checks. Here's What People Get Wrong.

A note on this data: PrintSizeChecker is a young tool, and these early figures include some of our own development and testing activity. We're sharing them because the patterns are already clear and genuinely useful — but treat the exact percentages as directional, not definitive. We'll update this page as the dataset grows and stabilises. Everything here is anonymous and aggregated; we never see or store the images themselves (see our Privacy Policy).

Since launch, people have run around 2,000 image checks through PrintSizeChecker and prepared 500+ print-ready files. The single clearest finding:

Nearly 1 in 4 recent print files were flagged "poor / pixelated" — headed for a disappointing print — before the tool caught it.

That's not a criticism of the people using it. It's the entire reason the tool exists: the problem is invisible on screen and only shows up on paper. Here's what the numbers say.

Finding 1: Almost a third of prints were headed for trouble

In a recent sample of prepared downloads, the quality breakdown looked like this:

  • ~63% EXCELLENT — plenty of resolution for the chosen size
  • ~8% GOOD — solid
  • ~6% FAIR / RISKY — borderline, would likely show softness
  • ~23% POOR / PIXELATED — not enough pixels; the print would look blurry

So roughly 29% — nearly one in three — were "fair" or worse, and almost a quarter were outright poor. Every one of those is a print order that would have arrived disappointing if it had gone straight to the lab.

Why it happens: a photo that looks crisp on a screen can be far too low-resolution for print. Screens show images at around 72–96 pixels per inch; labs print at 300. The screen makes low-res files look fine — right up until the print arrives.

Finding 2: The most-checked print size is 5×7 inches — by a mile

The sizes people actually check, most-popular first:

  1. 5 × 7 inch — by far the most common (nearly 4× the next size)
  2. 8 × 10 inch
  3. 4 × 6 inch
  4. 12 × 17 inch
  5. 11 × 14 inch

The takeaway: most people aren't checking huge canvas prints — they're checking small, classic photo sizes. Which makes the poor-quality rate more surprising: if images are struggling even at 5×7, the source files are often smaller than people realise.

Finding 3: 1 in 5 uploaded images was too small for a quality print

Looking at the images people uploaded:

  • Median upload: ~8.4 megapixels — fine for standard sizes
  • But ~21% were under 2 megapixels — too small for a sharp print at most sizes
  • The range ran from 0.19 MP (far too small) all the way to 42 MP

That 21% lines up neatly with the poor-quality rate above. A 2-megapixel image is fine for a phone screen or social media, but it simply doesn't contain enough detail for a sharp 8×10 print. This is the single most common, most fixable mistake — and the hardest to spot without checking, because the image looks perfect on your phone.

Finding 4: People check at screen resolution — a telltale misconception

One of the more revealing patterns: a large share of checks were run at 72 DPI — the resolution of a screen, not a print. That's a fingerprint of the exact misconception that causes bad prints: assuming that "looks sharp on my monitor" means "will print sharp." It won't. Print needs roughly 3–4× more pixel data than a screen to look equally crisp.

If you take one thing from this data: judge print readiness by the numbers, not by how it looks on your screen.

Finding 5: This is a global problem

Checks came in from around the world — led by the United States, followed by Australia, the United Kingdom, and a long tail including Sweden, Japan, the Netherlands, Italy, and Indonesia. Bad-print anxiety, it turns out, is universal.

What this means for you

If you're about to order a print:

  • Check before you order. Nearly a third of files in this data would have printed poorly — and every one of those was avoidable with a 5-second check.
  • Don't trust the screen. The most common mistake is assuming a screen-sharp image is print-ready. Judge by resolution, not appearance.
  • Bigger isn't always the risk — small source files are. Even modest 5×7 prints need more pixels than a typical phone screenshot or downloaded social image provides.
  • Know your minimum. As a rough guide, multiply your print size (in inches) by 300 to get the pixel dimensions you need. An 8×10 at 300 DPI wants roughly 2400×3000 pixels — about 7 megapixels.
